BULGARIAN CUISINE - Yoghurt

Yoghurt

There is no exact historical data about the origin of the Bulgarian yoghurt. Most likely it was discovered by the ancient Thracians - the first dwellers in our lands. The ancient Thrace lands had a fertile soil with various plant life. This was a premise for the Thracians to develop a huge sheep-breeding. The most important animal for the Thracians was the sheep.

Historical facts:
-          In 1712 a German explorer named E. Kampfer on his journey in Asia describes the palace of the Persian emperor, especially one particular room called "yogurt choneh". In this country yoghurt was used as a food for the people, poultry and cattle.
-          Chingis Khan used yoghurt as a food for his army and for preserving meat.
-          In Western Europe (France) the Bulgarian yoghurt is mentioned for the first time in 1644 after an Armenian from Tzarigrad successfully restored to health the French emperor Ludovic XI from a stomach sickness that the healers were unable to cure, by putting him on a Bulgarian yoghurt diet.
-          In 1903 the famous Russian scientist Ilya Mechnikov made a research in 36 countries and the results show that in Bulgaria there are 4 centenarians of 1000 people which was the most. He explained this with the regular consumption of Bulgarian yoghurt.
