ST.NEDELIA - BATAK
ABOUT THE CHURCH
The historical church “St. Nedelia” in Batak was built in 1813 for a period of 75 days.
It is a cruciform dome built of stone. It is about a meter and a half in the ground with a fence two meters high.
Inside the church is divided into three sections – for women, men and an altar.
The church was famous with its fresco and woodcut. The icon of “St .Nedelia” is kept to our days.
THE APRIL UPRISING
During the April Uprising in 1876, the church was converted as a last fortress for the people in their fight for freedom.
During a period of three days the 2000 men, women and children gathered inside defending heroically their honour and freedom.
All defenders of the fortress die in a cruel way.
During the April Uprising Batak gives more than 5000 victims.
Despite of the attempts of the Ottoman soldiers to burn down the church, only the woodwork inside the church burns up.
After the liberation during 1878 the church “St. Nedelia” is converted into charnel house museum.
